Hi, I am Ralph I’d like to be your guide on the journey to improve your photography.
I have been taking photos for nearly 40 years. Starting with a 110 Instamatic, playing with polaroids and Kodak 126 cartridge cameras I eventually moved up to a Russian built Zenith E SLR. All the time I was helping my dad developing black and white images in a makeshift darkroom under the stairs in our council house.
Things got serious when I left school and joined the Merchant Navy. A Pentax K1000 was replaced with an Olympus OM2 which travelled around the world, suffered much abuse and is still in a drawer upstairs.
Of course along came the new fangled digital cameras (which would never catch on) and after a succession of point and shoot cameras start at 0.3 megapixels I now shoot with the latest Medium Format 50Mp Pentax equipment.
As a full time commercial photographer I have to understand the entire digital workflow. It is easy to just point and press and think that the job is done. However, just like all those years ago in the dark room, to get the best out of an image it has to be ‘developed’. Post processing is essential if you want to make you images really stand out.
Image security is another forgotten topic. I know many, many people who walk around with thousands of irreplaceable images on their phone and nowhere else. One slip near a sink or a run in with a pickpocket and all those memories are lost forever. My living is based upon my images. Because of this I am obsessive about backing up and protecting them.
Improving your photography is a continuous process. I am still learning and so I don’t feel that the guidance and advice should stop at the ‘classroom’. So, I am taking things one step further. Once you have enrolled on one of my courses you will be able to join the Capturelight Camera Community Facebook Group. This is a private group with the aim of sharing experiences. posting pictures for critique and asking those little questions you forgot during the session. Membership pf this group does not incur any additional cost and I will regularly sign-in to provide additional advice and guidance.
I shall also update the group with any external training resources I find that will be beneficial. Members will also get early warning of any new courses, workshops or or tours and will receive discounts on further training.
All the courses, and workshops will be limited to a maximum of 5 delegates, to ensure a good level of interaction and learning, and will take place in my comfortable 450 sqft studio. Refreshments will be available throughout. For some courses, such as night photography we might go to another location, but this will be publicised in advance.
I aim to structure all of my training courses to try and suit most people’s busy lives and I have deliberately aimed to keep the cost affordable. Please follow the links for details of times, dates and prices.
The first course I am offering is entitled Foundations of Photography and is a wide ranging course designed to give you a firm understanding of all the basics, ‘leapfrog’ your photography to a new level and give you a firm foundation for future improvement. I am offering this course in two formats. Firstly as an evening course on Tuesdays and repeating it on Thursdays. It runs for 4 sessions each lasting 2 1/2 hours.
Secondly, as a full day training session. This will be a full 8 hour condensed course for those that want to ‘cram’ and achieve better results sooner.
Foundations of Photography
On this course, you’ll learn everything you need to know about the art and craft of great photography straight from a professional photographer with years of experience capturing commercial, family, landscapes, travel and event images.
